Like many other Yorkshire areas Sports is thrived upon in Wakefield. Rugby seems to be the main sport instead of football with the Wakefield Trinity Wildcats Rugby Club at the helm. This is a club which takes part in the Super League and plays its home games at Belle Vue. The stadium opened in 1895 and can seat up to thirteen thousand people. Its record attendance was in the region of twenty two thousand back in the 1960s and the club are said to be looking for an alternative venue.
Amateur rugby is also considered popular in the region and some of the main teams include East moor Dragons and also Westgate Wolves. Sandal RFC plays Rugby Union Football.
For football the main team is the Wakefield Football Club who play in division one of the Northern Premier League. It plays at College Grove but used to play at Belle Vue for some time in the early noughties.
